Help and Advice

A Grab truck holds approximately 16 tonnes

All prices plus VAT
Materials commonly used: * Prices indicative are for major contract works only in full loads:
Type 1 - 12-35mm stone with dust [fines] that compacts into a smooth surface £18.75 Tonne
6F2 - 35 to 65mm material of various origins, used for cheap bulk filling £ 16.50 tonne
Sharp Sand - used under Block paving, within Utility Trenches £18.50 Tonne
Soft sand - Commonly known as building sand for Brickwork £18.50 Tonne
P gravel - Used for drainage pipe surround £21.00 Tonne
6F2 Chalk - Cheap bulk fill material
£14.50 Tonne

Ordering the right amount of material can be daunting as too much and your throwing away new material and too little and your job is delayed or worse!

Work on 2 tonnes per cubic metre so if you need 10 m3 you will need 20 tonnes of materials..
Weights do vary but as a basic rule you will not go far wrong..

Excavated material bulks during excavation "Bulking" meaning that its not so compacted so when calculating the volume of the excavated material to be removed allow 10pc for bulking so if you excavate 100m3 the resulting spoil heap will be 10pc bigger say 110m3

When calculating the volume of aggregate needed remember that on average you will, once the stone is compacted, use 2 tonnes of stone for every 1m3 of void. So if you wanted to fill the 100m3 hole excavated above you will need 200 tonnes of stone.

Materials to be disposed of the trucks carry c 16 tonnes or c 8 m3:
Due to strict environmental laws materials must be disposed of correctly therefore you can play a part in this by separating the material you excavate This will make the job cleaner, cheaper and more ECO friendly:
Inert Materials:  Soil Clay : £ 195 .00 per load
Reclaimed Materials:  Brick , Rubble, Stone : £ 165.00 per load
Contaminated Materials:  Wood, Tarmac, Plastic, Packaging : £ 120 per load plus £75 per tonne for every tonne carried
****If you mixed these materials together we would have to charge the full load as a contaminated load..

"Grab Wagons are Large and Heavy and cannot turn sharply so as a rule of thumb consider these three things before ordering:
1] Height Restrictions is there any?, archways, overhead cables, bridges....
2] Weight Restrictions a standard driveway and footpath cannot take a 33 tonne truck, weak bridge, buried services !
3] Access must be clear and straight and at least 15ft wide"

     *Look for manhole covers
     *Look for overhead cables
*The spoil to be collected, the truck must be able to park alongside
8 wheeler grab weights 33 tonnes loaded 17 empty
